Group

1st Beddington Scout Group was started in 1920 and has been at it's present site since 1957.  We are a relatively small group on the edge of Sutton District, although our beaver colony is slowly growing, our cub pack, which is the largest section in our group, is teaming with enthusiastic cubs, and our scout troop continues to flourish and is at it's largest since it re-opened five years ago.

As with all Scout Groups we are run by volunteers, and this is not just the Section Leaders and Assistants that parents see every week - there are also a dedicated team of non-uniformed helpers who keep the group running by doing essential administration and support roles such as hiring out our premises, maintaining our grounds and managing our website. If you feel that you could get involved then we have a Volunteer section with some specific roles or if you wish to lend a less formal hand please contact us using the form on this site or via a Leader.  Of course you can still help by supporting your child and by attending some of our fund raising events, you may even enjoy it!

Here is a quick introduction to some of the people you may have seen around and about the Scout Hall.

Carole

Group Scout Leader - Carole Hierons

Carole has been our GSL since 2009. She was previously the cub scout leader from 1976 until 1999, when she took a break from Scouting. She is a very experienced leader and enjoys helping out with the cubs whenever she can. She cooks on camp, and particularly enjoys camping in the snow!

Rachel

Beaver Scout Leader - Rachel Endersby

Before becoming a leader, Rachel was the Treasurer, however her creative talents are best utilised in the beaver section, as she enjoys making things - one of her other qualities.

Tom

Cub Scout Leader - Tom Nixon

Tom is currently our longest serving volunteer, and can usually be spotted at most section meetings. He also chairs our Site Maintenance Working Group, and when he isn't doing things with the cubs, can usually be found sorting out lots of tents to take on camp or falling asleep in a chair!

Bob

Scout Leader - Bob Holness

Bob has been our Scout Leader since our troop re-opened, and has really developed the scout section. When he isn't thinking of boisterous games to play or sleeping in his hammock, Bob is usually mopping the floor for our next hall hire....or drinking green tea.

James

Assistant Scout Leader - James Endersby

In a former life, James was a cub scout leader in Sydenham. Luckily for us, his talents lie with the scout section. When he isn't imparting scout skills to eager teenagers, James enjoys mowing the lawn early on a Saturday morning and sticking frying pans to floors.

Andy

Group Chairman - Andy Read

Andy works in partnership with the Group Scout Leader, and supports her by taking care of the group's governance. When he's not calling the committee to order, he enjoys a round of golf or digging up weeds at the Scout Hall.

Linda Group Treasurer - Linda Martin
Carol Group Secretary - Carol Read

A good time was had by all that attended our AGM this year.  Our AGM was wrapped in to a fun day and BBQ.  The event started with a scavenger hunt around Beddington Park.  We returned to the hall and the grown ups joined in the fun of the AGM whilst the younger people had some fun outside in the glorious sunshine.  The grown ups emerged from the serious business of the AGM where they learned all about the Group, how the money goes, what the various sections do, the numerous thank you's that need to be said (because the group could not run without the many volunteers that help) and a shortish address from our District commissioner (Chris Williams).  The BBQ food was just right and the rest of the afternoon was spent enjoying the food and relaxed atmosphere.  There are a few photos in our galleries here, curtsey of Tom.

We had a action-packed fun day out on our day trip to Boulogne. We boarded the eurotunnel at Folkestone at half past seven in the morning, and we spent the morning walking around the old town of Boulogne, buying sweets from traditional French shops, and visiting the 13th century castle, where we invested our newest cub. We walked down through the town to the seafront and had lunch on the grass, where we also sang happy birthday to one of our scouts. In the afternoon we headed for Nausicaa sea-life centre where we saw sharks, sea-lions, mantle rays and clownfish to name but a few, before heading back to the UK and playing duck, duck, goose aboard the eurotunnel. Many thanks to all the cubs and scouts who went and displayed a fantastic image of 1st Beddington, and indeed, The Scout Association. Thanks must also be given to all those leaders who went and made the day a complete success, it could not have been done without them!

This trip was such an enjoyable experience for all our young members, and we shall be returning in 2012, so watch this space for more news!

We have a video below and a few photos here.

One of the activities enjoyed by the Scouts during our Centenary Camp was the Caving.

Once kitted out with some safety gear, the Scouts spent a couple of hours underground with some excellent guides as they explored the Godstone Mines which have been used for a number of things including Firestone, Hearthstone, Mushrooms and Bats.

To find out more and to see some pictures visit The Wealden Cave & Mine Society Website and look at the Godstone Main Series (GSM) areas.
